World Steel Association: August 2019 crude steel production Up by 3.4%


World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 156.0 million tonnes (Mt) in August 2019, a 3.4% increase compared to August 2018.

China’s crude steel production for the month was 87.3 million metric tons, an increase of 9.3 percent year over year. In July, the country produced 85.2 million metric tons of crude steel.

Other Asian countries saw their output decline, however, with Japan produced 7.8 percent less steel in August of this year compared with last year at 8.1 million metric tons. South Korea’s crude steel production was 5.9 million metric tons in August, a decrease of 2.6 percent compared with August 2018.

France and Germany increased their steel output year over year in August. France made 1.1 million tons of crude steel, which was 11.2 percent more than it made in August 2018, while Germany produced 3.3 million metric tons of crude steel in August, which was 0.8 percent more than it made in August of the previous year.

Italy saw its crude steel production decline considerably in August, however. That country produced 0.9 million metric tons for the month, a 26.7 percent reduction compared with August 20198. Spain’s production also declined. In August, the country made 1.1 million metric tons of crude steel, 4.6 percent less than in August 2018.

Crude production in the U.S. increased marginally in August. At 7.5 million metric tons, the country produced 0.3 percent more steel than in August 2018. The U.S. produced the same amount of crude steel in July.

At 2.5 million metric tons, Brazil’s crude steel production for August declined by 13.4 percent relative to August 2018.

Turkey’s crude steel production also declined in August. At 2.6 million metric tons, that country produced 12.4 percent less steel than it did in August 2018. Compared with the previous month, Turkey produced 0.3 million metric tons less crude steel in August.

Crude steel production in Ukraine was 1.9 million metric tons in August, an 8.5 percent increase year over year.
