Pittsburgh — Scrap Metal Services has entered into a multiyear mill service contract at JSW USA's Mingo Junction, Ohio, steel mill that will include slag removal and processing, metal recovery and other miscellaneous services, SMS has reported.
Baytown, Texas-based JSW USA is operating its strip mill currently and is nearing a restart of the facility's electric-arc furnace that last ran in 2009 as part of the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh complex. JSW USA's Indian-parent company, JSW Steel, purchased the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh facility for $81 million earlier this year.
"We are excited to grow our Mill Services platform and relationship with JSW USA," SMS CEO Jeffry Gertler said in a statement.
Along with mill services, Burnham, Illinois-based SMS also provides full-service scrap management and trading services although the deal with JSW announced does not include scrap procurement.
A ferrous scrap procurement team at the mill began buying scrap for August delivery according to local suppliers.
JSW USA has plans to install a new EAF at its Baytown plate and pipe mill by 2020. Currently the facility imports slabs.
"We are pleased to expand our relationship with SMS as JSW USA furthers its vision in Ohio, along with its facilities in Texas, to become the most technologically advanced melt and manufacture entity in North America," JSW USA President and CEO John Hritz said in a statement.
